On a Wednesday evening in August, if you walk down Bank Street toward the water, you can hear the Hygienic Art Park before you see it. A band on the outdoor stage, a bartender pouring under string lights, maybe fifty neighbors in folding chairs behind the Harris Building. Two blocks north, the Garde marquee is lit for a show that starts at seven. And down at Fort Trumbull, a former Navy launch is finishing its last loop of the day across the Thames.
This is the month the city runs at full volume. If you already live in New London, you know the rhythm. If you have been meaning to string a proper weekend together, August is the window, because a lot of what makes downtown feel like downtown is tied to a season that ends sooner than most residents realize.
The water taxi is only running four more weekends
The Thames River Heritage Park Hop On/Hop Off Harbor Cruise sounds like a tourist attraction. It kind of is. It is also the fastest way to get from Fort Trumbull to City Pier without moving your car, and residents use it that way constantly through the summer.
Here is the piece worth knowing: during the 2026 season, the water taxi shuttle operates on Saturdays and Sundays from Saturday, June 6 up to and including the CT Maritime Festival, ending Sunday, September 6, with hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. After Labor Day weekend, it is gone until next June.
A few things to file:
- Passengers can hop on and hop off at Fort Trumbull State Park and City Pier in New London and Thames River Landing in Groton, and round-trip harbor cruises are 40 minutes long.
- The park is celebrating its 10-year anniversary by adding a fourth stop at the Nautilus Dock via the Submarine Force Museum on Sundays, with a Traditional Saturday Schedule of three stops and a Specialty Sunday Schedule of four.
- Harbor Cruises run $10 adults round trip, $5 for children and active military, free for children three and under, with an adult season pass at $50 and a children's season pass at $30.
- This summer you can use your Harbor Cruise ticket receipt to unlock bonus discounts at New London and Groton businesses, shown at the register.
If you have out-of-town family in for a weekend, the four-stop Sunday loop is the single best move you can make with them. It gets you the Nautilus, the Fort, and back to Bank Street in time for dinner.
One block, two stages
The stretch of Bank and State between the Garde and Hygienic Art is the densest cluster of programming in the city, and August is when the schedules actually rhyme.
The Hygienic itself has an origin story most residents can recite by heart. The building on Bank Street dates back to 1844 as the Harris Building, first used as a ships provision store and crew quarters by Captain Harris, a member of one of New London's prominent whaling families, and in 1931 it became the Hygienic Restaurant and Delicatessen. Today, it is the outdoor art park behind that building that anchors summer nights downtown.

The Garde does the heavy lifting on the indoor side. The Garde Arts Center encompasses an entire city block of adjoining buildings, and the historic 1,420-seat theater was built in 1926 during the height of motion picture and vaudeville. The CSNY tribute on Sunday, August 16 at 7 p.m. at the Garde is a nice pairing with an early dinner on State Street. Later in the month, keep an eye on the park calendar for the annual Shoreline Reggaefest, which the local music blog Wailing City places at Hygienic in August as part of the same summer festival run that includes Celebrate New London and Mitch Fest.
Ocean Beach in the evening is a different city
Most residents think of Ocean Beach Park as a day trip with kids. In August, it is also an outdoor venue that quietly hosts some of the better tribute nights in the region. The Prince show on Friday, August 7 at 7 p.m. and the Steely Dan tribute on Friday, August 14 at 7 p.m., both at Ocean Beach Park, are the kind of Friday plans you would drive to Fairfield County for.
The one you should not miss if you have not been: New London Pride at Ocean Beach on Saturday, August 8 starting at 11 a.m. It is the biggest daytime turnout of the month at that end of the city, and if you have friends renting in Waterford or Groton, this is the day to invite them over.
Where the block is going
A working theory about downtown right now: the food scene is thickening in a way the rental market has not fully caught up to.
Exhibit A is on Bank Street. A barbecue restaurant in Mystic will expand with a second location in downtown New London, and Noble Smokehouse is planning to open at 74 Bank St., with owner Joshua Feldman saying the opening has been delayed due to construction issues but is on track for either March or April. The version coming to New London is not a Mystic copy. The New London restaurant is considerably bigger than the Mystic location and will be able to handle four times the volume, with a 40-foot-long bar, capacity for special events, and what Feldman describes as a fun atmosphere with nightlife and a rustic BBQ theme.
Read that against a landmark most people forget is a landmark: New London's Historic Waterfront District, where over 30 eateries populate a 26-block National Register Historic District. A restaurant that quadruples volume on Bank Street is not a lifestyle upgrade for the block. It is a bet on a much bigger Friday and Saturday than the block was designed for.
For an August dinner tonight, though, the reliable coordinates are the ones you already know. On The Waterfront is family-run by Stash Schiavone and Chef Anthony Schiavone with views of the Thames River, a large dining room with waterfront views, a full bar, and an outdoor patio in warmer months. The Social Bar + Kitchen and The Blue Duck Bar & Kitchen keep the later hours; both show up on the August live-music schedules a few times a week.
The end of the month is really the first weekend of September
August in New London closes on a specific note, and it is worth putting on the calendar now.
The 2026 Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival is held at Fort Trumbull State Park and the Waterfront Park. The date: Saturday, September 12, opening at 10 a.m. Two things about it that residents keep telling first-timers to plan for:
On September 12, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM at the New London Waterfront Park, a 300-drone light show will take place over the Thames River, viewable from Downtown New London.
And the older tradition it sits inside. The Burning of Benedict Arnold march starts at The Social on Bank Street and ends at Waterfront Park, resurrected each year by Flock Theatre as a fiery festival of music, food, fife and drum, and Revolutionary-era pageantry.
If you are the kind of resident who has walked past the Custom House Maritime Museum a hundred times without going in, this is the weekend the whole waterfront is set up to reward paying attention. The water taxi shuttles between the two festival venues for free that day, which is also, by design, the last weekend the taxi runs at all.
A short list for a first August weekend
If you are picking one weekend to actually do this properly:
- Friday evening. Water taxi from Fort Trumbull to City Pier at 5 p.m., dinner on the patio at On The Waterfront, then walk up Bank Street to whatever is on at the Hygienic or a late set at The Social.
- Saturday. Ocean Beach in the morning, home to change, back downtown for a show at the Garde or a tribute night at Ocean Beach after dark.
- Sunday. The four-stop Sunday water taxi loop with the Nautilus stop, then a slow walk back through the 26-block historic district before the shops close.
You have five weekends left in the season the city was built for. Then September resets the whole thing.
